Jesus Cañas
Senior Business Economist
Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas
 
Jesus Cañas is a senior business economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas analyzing regional economic growth. His research also focuses on issues pertaining to the Mexican economy, the U.S.–Mexico border economy and cross-border manufacturing. He has written articles for academic journals such as Annals of Regional Science and Growth and Change and co-edited Ten Gallon Economy: Sizing up Economic Growth in Texas. His publication "Texas Border Cities Illustrate Benefits and Challenges of Trade" has been mentioned in the Wall Street Journal as well as in all major Texas newspapers.
 
Cañas is a member of the Mission Foods Texas–Mexico Center Faculty Advisory Board at Southern Methodist University, charged with the task of improving the Texas–Mexico relationship in its economic, political, social and cultural aspects. He is also an adjunct professor at Texas Christian University. He holds a BA in economics and finance and an MS in economics from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Luis Cavazos, our LT Governor presiding over District 5930 was the Guest Speaker at our Rotary meeting on Friday, August 7th.
 
Mr. Cavazos delivered an impactful address regarding our Rotary’s mission to continue building fellowship and goodwill in our respectful districts. Coping with the COVID – 19 pandemic has challenged all Rotarians to implement and enforce the endless opportunities to help the world heal in accordance with our true core values. He also addressed public image and public service as tools to build Rotary’s core foundation.

New Member Spotlight

Daniel Martinez is a small business owner who has owned his Farmers Insurance agency in Harlingen for the last 6 years. He is a native of Harlingen where he was born and raised and continues to give back to the community through his insurance agency. Daniel continues to demonstrate growth as a small business owner and a community leader by partnering with other small businesses and organizations by giving back when it matters most.

He loves to live an active lifestyle by working out, and also loves to travel with his wife, Audrey. When he isn’t traveling he enjoys the outdoors with his two dogs Ace, and Peaches. He is excited to join Harlingen Rotary and work with the wonderful people we have in our community.

 
Other News
The Harlingen Public Library is not hosting any private events at all, and meetings of more than same-household folks are strongly discouraged by CDC and local government.
We are considering other options for face-to-face meetings including a hybrid zoom with face-to-face.
