Veterans Forum Honors Service and Sacrifice

On Friday, November 7, the Rotary Club of Harlingen hosted its annual Veterans Forum at Golden Palms in the Texas Room, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The program began with a dignified presentation of the colors by the New American Legion Post 205, followed by the solemn notes of Taps. The national anthem was beautifully performed by Bianca Rios, a member of the Harlingen South choir, setting the tone for an afternoon of reflection and gratitude.

Cadets from the Marine Military Academy, under the leadership of Kevin Chen, president of the Interact Club, moderated the discussion and posed thoughtful questions to the veterans. Their inquiries sparked meaningful dialogue, offering attendees a glimpse into the courage, resilience, and commitment that define military service.

Our honored veterans shared compelling stories from their time in uniform, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made to safeguard the freedoms we have today. Their experiences underscored the enduring values of duty and honor, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

As we approach Veterans Day on November 11, this forum served as a powerful prelude to the national observance—a heartfelt tribute to those who have served and a reminder that liberty is preserved through the dedication of individuals willing to answer the call.

 
 

Lower Rio Grande Valley Hub Assembly: Connecting for Impact

On Saturday, November 8, Rotarians and Rotaractors from across District 5930 gathered for the Lower Rio Grande Valley Hub Assembly, an event designed to empower clubs and strengthen connections. Hosted from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., the assembly focused on Rotary’s four priorities: Increase Impact, Expand Reach, Enhance Engagement, and Increase Adaptability. These themes guided interactive sessions on Membership, Public Image, and The Rotary Foundation, helping attendees return to their clubs with actionable ideas for growth and service. One of the highlights was a creative networking activity—think “speed dating,” but for Rotarians! Participants rotated through quick, focused conversations, sharing best practices and building relationships that will spark collaboration across the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

We deeply appreciate the support and energy from District 5930 leadership and all the Lower RGV clubs that made this event a success. A special thank-you goes to Los Fresnos CISD Career Technology Education Department  for providing delicious food that fueled the day’s discussions. Their catering team delivered a menu that balanced flavor and nutrition, ensuring everyone stayed energized throughout the event. The theme, “Unite for Good,” resonated in every conversation, reminding us that when we work together, we amplify our impact and create lasting change in our communities.

 
 

Rotary in Action: Building Safer Communities Together

On Saturday, November 8, Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Harlingen, Sunburst Rotary Club, and even friends from the City of Mission Rotary Club joined forces with the American Red Cross South Texas Chapter, the Harlingen Fire Marshal, Cameron County Emergency Management, and other partners including students from the UTRGV School of Social Work for the Disaster South Texas Smoke Alarm Event.

This collaborative effort brought together 60+ volunteers who visited 76 homes, installed 152 smoke alarms, and educated 220 residents on fire safety. These numbers represent more than statistics; they reflect countless lives potentially saved and a stronger, safer community.

We were proud to see Rotary leadership in action with President-Elect Belinda, Sergeant At Arms Roel and Delia, AG and Secretary Juju, President Eric from Sunburst, Dr. Luis Torres from City of Mission Rotary, and Kayla Gonzalez from our own club. And let’s not forget future Rotarian Esteban, proving that service starts early!

Thank you to every volunteer and partner who made this day a success. Together, we demonstrated the true meaning of Service Above Self—empowering families with safety and peace of mind.

Club Meeting – Special Presentation This Friday!

Join us on Friday, November 14, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Golden Palms – Texas Room for an inspiring session with Lucy Cadenas, our fellow Rotarian who serves as Lt. Governor for the Lower Rio Grande Valley Hub, as well as our club’s Polio Plus Chair and Foundation Chair.

Lucy will share insights from the recent District 5930 Hub Assembly and update us on key initiatives that strengthen Rotary’s impact in our communities. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how we can Unite for Good and advance Rotary’s mission locally and globally.

50/50 Raffle Update

Earlier this Rotary year in September, Dillon Dawi scored a win in our raffle—rumor has it, all for diapers (after all, he’s a new dad!). Then, in an incredible twist, Kathy Preddy, who already won a much larger pot back in December 2024, struck luck again this past Friday by pulling the Ace of Diamonds and taking home $186! Talk about a lucky streak worth keeping track of!

With all four aces claimed since 2023, it’s time for a fresh start. We’re changing the game; the new lucky card is the Queen of Hearts. A new deck of cards is reset, and the excitement begins again!

What an amazing start to November! From honoring our veterans to installing smoke alarms and strengthening connections at the Hub Assembly, we’ve already demonstrated the power of Rotary in action—and we’re just getting started.

November is Rotary Foundation Month, a time to reflect on how our contributions fuel life-changing projects locally and globally. Every dollar given to the Foundation helps fight disease, provide clean water, support education, and, of course, eradicate polio. Let’s keep that momentum going and make this month one of impact and generosity.
